I have been looking for a way to get a little exercise without killing my right knee. I remembered my mom saying something about one time either that she used to belly dance or wanted to learn so I did a little research. So I got on line and looked for a couple of DVD’s. Then I got a gift certificate to Borders and I figured that was a sign so I went out and bought a introduction to belly dancing video.
Then I talked a friend of mine into doing it with me so I don’t have to feel stupid alone. Every week day we are supposed to get together and do this, but she missed today so I started on my own. I can’t tell you how much fun I had! I’m watching these two expert twigs I mean dancers and trying to follow along. I sat there sometimes just laughing out loud because my flowing arms were more like the old robot dance. And the hip circles were a riot because as I circled I was was praying I wouldn’t knock anything over.
The first part of the video which is learning the basic moves is like 40 minutes long and I’ll be stuck there for a while. Some stuff I did well, but for the most part I got a lot to learn. When I got done I was sweaty, heart rate was up and I couldn’t stop smiling. All I could think of was elephants gracefully dancing in pink tutu. The introduction talks about how learning belly dancing will make a person more sensual. My first thought was I don’t give a fuck about that I want to strengthen my back and see my shoes. But it is sensual and I caught myself doing hip thrusts and belly circles when I was cooking or folding clothes, then smiling about it. Looks like I might have found an exercise that I like.

Ain’t it great? I got all the way to standing on tiptoes and bending backward. That was my stopping point because of the ankles and feet. I loved the hip thrusts and the belly circles. Wish I lived closer because I would try to practice with you even if I am old!!!
